The Great Service Fee Confusion: "Did We Already Tip?"
The most common financial mistake couples make is assuming the 20%–25% "Service Charge" on catering and venue invoices is a tip for the waitstaff.
In most legal jurisdictions, a service charge is taxable revenue belonging to the catering company to cover administrative overhead, insurance, and base wages. Unless your contract explicitly includes a line stating "100% of the service charge is distributed as gratuity," the servers and bartenders pouring your drinks are working for base hourly pay and rely on day-of cash tips.

The 3-Step Cash Envelope System

- Withdraw Crisp Bank Bills: Go to your bank branch 5 days before the wedding and get clean $20 and $50 bills.
- Label Sealed Envelopes: Write the vendor's name, role (e.g. "Lead Bartender — John"), and exact cash amount on the front of each envelope. Include a handwritten thank-you note inside.
- Designate a Cash Captain: Give the master envelope pouch to the Best Man, Father of the Groom, or Day-of Coordinator with a checklist of when each envelope should be handed out.
